Vancouver’s west side generally refers to the western half of the city, with Ontario Street marking its eastern border, UBC to the west, the Fraser River to the south and English Bay on the north. Known for its high land values, beaches , trails, bike paths and top notch public and private schools, west side Vancouver is actually made up of a number of neighbourhoods, some of which were distinct communities at one time but where the lines separating them are now often blurred.
Kitsilano is marked by a collection of upscale boutiques, eateries and retail outlets and the English Bay beaches Locarno, Spanish Banks and Jericho as well as Granville Island Public Market. Affluent Kerrisdale, where leafy streets featuring large, new homes are seen alongside older bungalows and low and mid-rise apartments and condominiums and parks and green spaces abound. The Fairview neighbourhood is a centre for health-related institutions, including Vancouver General Hospital and the BC Cancer Agency as well as City Hall and the central Broadway business district.
West Point Grey, bordering the University of British Columbia and its Endowment Lands offers thriving retail strip along West 4th and West 10th Avenues and is known as a neighbourhood catering to the outdoor lifestyle. South Granville is just a bridge away from the downtown business district while featuring bustling retail stores of every stripe. Quiet streets and proximity to amenities makes South Granville a convenient location for residents. Marpole sits at west side Vancouver’s southern edge, positioned midway between downtown Vancouver and Richmond with easy access to several major transit routes, including the new Canada Line.
With Vancouver land values continuing to rise, newcomers often look to the city’s west side for rental apartment accommodation, where good schools and a wide range of amenities are attainable without a multi-million dollar investment.
